AAP Pediatric Blood Pressure Stage calculator
Enter the published formula inputs below to calculate and interpret this score.
Clinical inputs
Allowed range: 1–17 years
Completed years, 1 through 17, as printed in Tables 4 and 5. From age 13 years the stage uses the Table 3 mm Hg cutoffs.
Allowed range: 40–260 mm Hg
Enter systolic pressure in mm Hg from one reading. The guideline asks for repeated readings before a diagnosis.
Allowed range: 20–180 mm Hg
Enter diastolic pressure in mm Hg from the same reading.

Flynn JT et al. Clinical Practice Guideline for Screening and Management of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents. Pediatrics. DOI: 10.1542/peds.2017-1904. PMID: 28827377. Table 3, children aged 1 to younger than 13 years: normal is below the 90th percentile; elevated is the 90th percentile up to the 95th percentile, or 120/80 mm Hg up to the 95th percentile, whichever is lower; stage 1 is the 95th percentile up to the 95th percentile + 12 mm Hg, or 130/80 to 139/89 mm Hg, whichever is lower; stage 2 is the 95th percentile + 12 mm Hg, or 140/90 mm Hg or higher, whichever is lower. The same table, age 13 years or older: normal is below 120/80 mm Hg; elevated is 120/<80 to 129/<80 mm Hg; stage 1 is 130/80 to 139/89 mm Hg; stage 2 is 140/90 mm Hg or higher. Tables 4 and 5 print systolic and diastolic mm Hg at the 90th, 95th, and 95th + 12 mm Hg for boys and girls by completed year of age and height percentiles 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, and 95. For age 13 years or older the stage follows Table 3 and does not use those percentile cells. The higher of the systolic category and the diastolic category is the stage. Table 6 is a screening list and is not this stage. One reading is staged here; the guideline asks for repeated measurements before a diagnosis. (2017)
