Reflux hypersensitivity requires retrosternal symptoms including heartburn and chest pain, normal endoscopy and no evidence that eosinophilic esophagitis is the cause, no major esophageal motor disorder, and evidence that reflux events trigger symptoms despite normal acid exposure on pH or pH-impedance monitoring. Response to antisecretory therapy does not exclude the diagnosis. Criteria are fulfilled for the past 3 months, with onset at least 6 months earlier, at least twice a week. (2016)
