Functional dyspepsia requires postprandial distress syndrome and/or epigastric pain syndrome. Postprandial distress syndrome is bothersome postprandial fullness and/or early satiation severe enough to prevent finishing a regular-size meal. At least one of those two symptoms must occur on 3 or more days a week; days are not pooled across symptoms. Epigastric pain syndrome is bothersome epigastric pain and/or burning on at least 1 day a week. Organic, systemic, metabolic, and structural disease, including findings at upper endoscopy, must not explain the symptoms. Criteria apply for the last 3 months, with onset at least 6 months earlier.
