For clinical purposes infant colic (G4) requires an infant younger than 5 months when the symptoms start and when they stop, recurrent prolonged crying, fussing, or irritability without obvious cause that caregivers cannot prevent or resolve, and no failure to thrive, fever, or illness. Crying that caregivers can soothe does not meet G4. The diary threshold used in research is not part of this clinical rule. (2016)
