Primary source

Ferris DG, Greenberg MD. Reid's colposcopic index. J Fam Pract. 1994;39(1):65-70. PMID: 7517993. Four signs are each scored 0 to 2. Margin: 0 condylomatous or micropapillary contour, indistinct or feathered borders, jagged or angular outline, or satellite lesions; 1 smooth, fairly straight outline; 2 raised, peeling edges or an internal border within a larger low-grade lesion. Color of acetowhitening: 0 shiny, semitransparent snow-white; 1 intermediate or off-white; 2 dense, dull oyster-gray. Vessels: 0 fine, nondilated capillaries in punctation or mosaic; 1 no surface vessels; 2 coarse, dilated punctation or mosaic. Iodine (Lugol's, scored last): 0 mahogany-brown uptake; 1 variegated, tortoise-shell partial uptake; 2 mustard-yellow rejection only when the first three signs total 3 or more, otherwise rejection scores 0. Total 0-2 predicts HPV or CIN I, 3-5 CIN I or II, 6-8 CIN II or III. Worked cases: margin 0, color 1, vessels 0 with iodine rejection totals 1; margin 1, color 1, vessels 2 with iodine rejection totals 6. Original index: Reid R, Scalzi P, Am J Obstet Gynecol 1985.
