Rebound Hyperbilirubinemia Risk Score calculator

Enter the published formula inputs below to calculate and interpret this score.

Clinical inputs

weeks

Allowed range: 35–44 weeks

Quick picks

Under 38 weeks adds 15.5 to the score. 38 weeks and older adds 0.

mg/dL

Allowed range: 0–40 mg/dL

Quick picks

Hour-specific AAP phototherapy threshold at the age when phototherapy began, in mg/dL.

mg/dL

Allowed range: 0–40 mg/dL

Quick picks

Ending total serum bilirubin in mg/dL. The gap is the starting threshold minus this value.

Chang PW, Kuzniewicz MW, McCulloch CE, Newman TB. A Simpler Prediction Rule for Rebound Hyperbilirubinemia. Pediatrics. DOI: 10.1542/peds.2018-3712. PMID: 31196939. Logistic coefficients in the derivation set were 1.55 for gestational age under 38 weeks and −0.43 per mg/dL of starting-threshold minus ending total serum bilirubin. The score multiplies those coefficients by 10: 15.5 if gestational age is under 38 weeks, minus 4.3 times the gap in mg/dL. The paper's worked examples are a gap of 2 mg/dL, with a reported rebound probability of 2.5% at or after 38 weeks (score −8.6) and 10.2% before 38 weeks (score 6.9). A gap of 5.5 mg/dL before 38 weeks (score −8.15) had a reported probability of 2.6%. (2019)
