Primary source

Wolfe F, Michaud K, Pincus T. A composite disease activity scale for clinical practice, observational studies, and clinical trials: the patient activity scale (PAS/PAS-II). J Rheumatol. PMID: 16331773. The methods form each scale by multiplying the HAQ, or the HAQ-II for PAS-II, by 3.33 and dividing the sum of that product, the pain visual analog scale, and the patient global visual analog scale by 3. Pain and global are on the 0 to 10 scale printed in Table 2, and HAQ and HAQ-II are on the 0 to 3 scale. The reported means, HAQ 1.08 with pain 3.8 and global 3.7, and HAQ-II 1.04 with the same visual analog scales, both give a displayed activity score of 3.7. England BR et al. 2019 Update of the American College of Rheumatology Recommended Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity Measures. Arthritis Care Res. DOI: 10.1002/acr.23881. PMID: 31709779. Table 1 prints remission at or below 0.25, low activity above 0.26 through 3.70, moderate activity from 3.71 up to but not including 8.0, and high activity at or above 8.0. Table 1 names no category for a value above 0.25 through 0.26, or above 3.70 and below 3.71. Those intervals are not low activity. Low activity is above 0.26 through 3.70. The category follows the unrounded value because rounding to one decimal can move 0.25, 0.26, 3.70, 3.71, and 8.0. A difference smaller than 0.000001 from a printed cutoff is treated as that cutoff.
