Mower WR et al. Validation of the sensitivity of the National Emergency X-Radiography Utilization Study (NEXUS) Head computed tomographic (CT) decision instrument for selective imaging of blunt head injury patients. PLoS Med. DOI: 10.1371/journal.pmed.1002313. PMID: 28700585. CT may be omitted by the rule only when evidence of skull fracture, scalp hematoma, neurologic deficit, abnormal alertness, abnormal behavior, persistent vomiting, coagulopathy, and age 65 years or older are all absent. Age 65 is included. Persistent vomiting means more than one episode. A criterion that cannot be assessed, or an unstable patient, is not low risk. Sensitivity for neurosurgical intervention was 100% (420 of 420). (2017)
