American Psychiatric Association. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Arlington: American Psychiatric Association. DOI: 10.1176/appi.books.9780890425596. A manic episode needs elevated or irritable mood with increased activity for at least 7 days, or any duration if hospitalization is required, plus at least 3 associated domains when mood is elevated and at least 4 when mood is only irritable, with marked impairment, hospitalization, or psychosis, not attributable to a substance. A hypomanic episode uses at least 4 days, the same domain count, a clear shift in everyday functioning that is unlike the person when well, and a mood and functioning shift that other people can notice, and none of marked impairment, hospitalization, or psychosis. A major depressive episode needs at least 5 of 9 domains for at least 2 weeks, including depressed mood or loss of interest, with clinically important distress or impairment, not attributable to a substance. The result is 2 when a manic episode is met, 1 when hypomania and a major depressive episode are met without mania, and 0 otherwise. (2013)
