Rao SSC, Bharucha AE, Chiarioni G, et al. Anorectal disorders. Gastroenterology. DOI: 10.1053/j.gastro.2016.02.009. PMID: 27144630. This category is met by levator ani syndrome or by unspecified functional anorectal pain. Both require chronic or recurrent rectal pain or aching, episodes lasting 30 minutes or longer, and exclusion of inflammatory bowel disease, intramuscular abscess and fissure, thrombosed hemorrhoids, prostatitis, coccygodynia, and major structural pelvic-floor disease. Levator ani syndrome requires tenderness when the puborectalis is pulled. Unspecified functional anorectal pain uses the same symptom criteria with that tenderness absent. Either subtype meets this category. Criteria are fulfilled for the last 3 months with onset at least 6 months earlier. Proctalgia fugax is a separate rule. (2016)
