Gorelick MH, Stevens MW, Schultz TR, Scribano PV. Performance of a novel clinical score, the Pediatric Asthma Severity Score (PASS), in the evaluation of acute asthma. Acad Emerg Med. 2004;11:10-18. Item descriptors read from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia asthma clinical pathways (Emergency Department assessment key points, PICU and primary care severity pages), which print the PASS with range 0-6. Wheezing: 0 none or end of expiration only; 1 throughout expiration; 2 inspiratory and expiratory, or absent due to poor air exchange. Work of breathing: 0 normal or minimal retractions; 1 intercostal retractions; 2 suprasternal retractions, abdominal breathing. Prolonged expiration: 0 normal or minimally prolonged; 1 moderate; 2 severely prolonged. The pathways print no total-score cutoffs for mild, moderate or severe. (2004)
