Primary source

Dale DC. Neutropenia. MSD Manual Professional Version (reviewed February 2025). ANC = total white blood cell count × (% segmented neutrophils + % bands). Severity: mild 1000–1500/µL (1–1.5 × 10⁹/L), moderate 500–1000/µL, severe <500/µL; lower limit of normal about 1500/µL in White patients and about 1200/µL in Black patients. Below 500/µL endogenous flora can cause infection. Fever-and-neutropenia guidance (Freifeld AG et al. Clin Infect Dis 2011;52:e56-e93, DOI 10.1093/cid/cir073) also uses ANC <500 cells/mm³. (2025)
